Billion-dollar disasters used to be rare. Now they arrive twice a month.

For the first two decades of NOAA's record, the United States averaged fewer than four weather and climate disasters a year costing $1 billion or more. Since 2020, the average is 23 — and the three worst years on record have all come since 2020.
